Vintage and Art Fair set for Caterham

Vintage and Art Fair set for Caterham

The first ever Caterham Vintage and Art Fair will take place at the Soper Hall on 17 September.

The fair is the brainchild of Anita Collins and will be a free community event for fans of affordable vintage and art, and those who are just curious or love a rummage through vintage clothes, accessories and home-wares.

An exhibition of vintage-inspired art and a variety of quirky, original art works and crafts from Surrey and South London based artists will also be on display.

Old fashioned music hall style live entertainment will be provided as well as a vintage ’tea room’, a tombola, raffle and a guess the weight of the cakes competition.

There will be 18 stalls of vintage clothes, art, vintage-inspired art and crafts. The RSPCA Charity Shop in Caterham and East Surrey Museum has been given a free stall during the event.

“I am very excited to be putting on an event for the people of Caterham, and making beautiful and old things available and affordable for the local community,” said organiser Anita Collins.

Soper Hall goes to the Soper Hall Community Centre Limited

Soper Hall goes to the Soper Hall Community Centre Limited

Tandridge councillors have overwhelmingly voted to transfer the Soper Hall in Caterham to the Soper Hall Community Centre Limited (SHCCL) for the group to develop and run the building as a community facility.

SHCCL saw off a rival bid from Caterham Baptist Church to run the venue. SHCCL aims to manage the Hall as a community centre.

Tandridge District Council has agreed to provide up to £100,000 matched funding over two years to either organisation, on the understanding the Caterham and Warlingham Citizens Advice Bureau, Tandridge Voluntary Service Council and Lions Talking Newspaper would continue to be based at the building.

In addition, Surrey County Council has approached Tandridge District Council and would like to explore the potential for setting up a public services Hub in the building, similar to the one in Oxted.

The 99-year-old Soper Hall used to be the council offices until it moved to Oxted in 1974.

Options from the Caterham Baptist Church and the SHCCL for the future management of Soper Hall were considered at the Resources Committee on 30 June, but the final decision was deferred to Council on 21 July for all councillors to decide which group should take over Soper Hall.

At the meeting a petition from the Soper Hall Community Centre Limited was presented by its Chairman, Graham Tapley.

Following this, Councillor Jane Ingham put forward a motion to transfer the Soper Hall to SHCCL. This was put to the vote and carried.

A report about the details of the transfer, including the terms of the legal agreement, will be considered by the Resources Committee on 13 October.

“During this process we have considered a lot of detailed information,” said leader of the council, Councillor Gordon Keymer.

“Doing nothing was not an option, but the final two proposals were both viable as presented and offered a tangible future for the Soper Hall. It was appropriate for the final decision to be made by all councillors.

“Local support for the Soper Hall Community Centre group has been very strong and we feel we have made the best decision by securing the building for the widest possible community benefit.”

East Surrey MP Sam Gyimah welcomed the decision. “Congratulations to the Soper Hall Community Centre ltd on winning the right to develop and run the Hall as a community centre for Caterham,” he said.

“And the people of Tandridge. Fantastic and tenacious effort. Look forward to doing all I can to help make this a success over the coming years.”

Councillors get final vote on Caterham’s Soper Hall

Councillors get final vote on Caterham’s Soper Hall

Tandridge District Councillors will now cast the final vote on whether the Soper Hall in Caterham should be run by a community group or by Caterham Baptist Church on 21 July.

The Council’s Resource Committee considered that the bid by the Caterham Baptist Church has the greatest chance of success and is the least risky but it also recognised the support of residents and councillors for the bid from the Soper Hall Community Centre Limited.

SHCCL aims to manage the Hall as a community centre and rival bidder Caterham Baptist Church is looking for new premises to develop its activities, as its Beechwood Road site is not large enough.

The Church has vowed that the Soper Hall could also be used for community use although its primary activity would be for church activities.

The Soper Hall used to be the council offices until it moved to Oxted in 1974.

“This is an incredibly complex decision to make, we have discussed it four times at Committee and during this process have considered a lot of detailed information and rejected a number of alternatives,” said chairman of the Resources Committee, Councillor Martin Fisher.

“Both options are viable as presented and would provide a future for the Soper Hall as a community centre. Whatever the outcome, we need to make sure we have made the best decision for the community and have secured the building for the community.”

Community bid

SHCCL is to hold a two-day open event  on Friday 8 July and Saturday 9 July to explain its community strategy to residents and will be writing to residents as part of its final push.
Councillor Sally Marks is fully behind the bid from SHCCL.

“Thousands of people have now signed the Petition to Save the Soper Hall.  There can’t be a better example of ‘Localism’ than the community itself working together to ensure that the largest conurbation in the District of Tandridge can secure its own community space for this generation and for generations to come.

“I am so pleased that Surrey County Council wants also to be involved in this exciting project and may be able to contribute by providing the Caterham Library within the Soper Hall — thus ensuring a sustainable and secure future for our local library service as well. Another example of excellent ‘partnership working’.”

She added: “I am sure that the Tandridge District Councillors, when they understand the strength of feeling amongst Caterham residents, will want to support this community scheme — and will indeed be envious of the good community feeling that now exists here in this previously somewhat neglected area of Tandridge.

“If we lose the Soper Hall now, the community will lose out forever — but I am quietly confident that all elected Tandridge District councillors will see the merit of listening to the people and doing something really positive — saving the Soper Hall for all the people of Caterham.”

Former Eastenders star Lucy Speed, who played Natalie Price, will be at the Soper Hall lending her support to the community campaign over the weekend.

Soper Hall decision delayed until June

Soper Hall decision delayed until June

Tandridge District Council has pledged £100,000 in matched funding to help redevelop the Soper Hall in Caterham — but failed to decide whether its future lays as a community centre or a church.

The council’s Resources Committee decided that it needed more time to consider the plans put forward by both sides for the Soper Hall, which used to be the council offices until it moved to Oxted in 1974. A further report will now be made in June.

The Soper Hall Community Centre Limited (SHCCL) aims to manage the Hall as a community centre and rival bidder Caterham Baptist Church is looking for new premises to develop its activities, as its Beechwood Road site is not large enough.

The Church has vowed that the Soper Hall could also be used for community use although its primary activity would be for church activities.

Tandridge District Council has agreed to provide up to £100,000 matched funding over two years to either organisation, on the understanding the Caterham and Warlingham Citizens Advice Bureau, Tandridge Voluntary Service Council and Lions Talking Newspaper would continue to be based at the building.

The council has requested more details around the resilience and robustness of the SHCCL’s business plan and clarification of the Church’s proposals for community use and any restrictions it may place on users.

Each group will be invited to a special challenge session to discuss their proposals in more depth with the Resources Committee chairman councillor Martin Fisher, vice-chairman councillor Simon Ainsworth and the chief executive Stephen Weigel.

In addition, Surrey County Council has approached Tandridge District Council and would like to explore the potential for setting up a public services Hub in the building, similar to the one in Oxted.

“We are looking for the best solution for the community and the Council, so we need to consider the proposals in more depth at the challenge sessions before we make a final decision,” said Fisher.

“I am pleased the debate at last night’s meeting had cross party support. While it is not financially viable for the Council to keep the building as it is, we must make sure that the outcome benefits our residents.”
